The genus Orthemis is mainly tropical, with only one species, the Roseate skimmer, occurring in the United States. The males are a dazzling color, which is more purple near their head and blending into pink at the tail. There is no mistaking this species, even at a distance. The female, pictured below, is brown and has a flange, or widened area near the tip of the tail.
