This curious little fly is found only around decaying cactus, hence the name Cactus Fly. They frequent prickly pear in our area and usually appear for a brief period during the late summer to mate and lay their eggs. The larvae feed on the cactus, and the flies spend a lot of time squabbling over the perfect patch of rotten plant flesh.
