The Rock Dove, or pigeon, is found throughout the United States, especially in cities. This species originated in Europe but domesticated birds escaped and found all of North America to their liking. While most rock doves have a coloration similar to that shown above, there are various other color patterns and combinations, including white, black, and brown, that occur in flocks, mostly due to selectively bred domestic pigeons that interbreed with wild ones. Rock doves almost always roost and forage in flocks, and are frequently seen feeding here in Austin with white-winged doves and mourning doves.
